Marvin Gaye gives us the song for today, After the Dance (Instrumental) off of the I Want You album. This is my junk right here. I would really like to know how many babies have been made to this song. When that synth bass kicks in, the drawls come down. For real... the boy knew how to write a sex number.
While you're at it, go ahead and peep this video of Marvin singing The National Anthem. I don't think there are many singers that could bring tears to my eyes with this song, but he managed to.
I just found these two video interviews of Fenriz from the legendary black metal pioneers Darkthrone, and it just confirms in my mind how fucking rad he is. As grim and evil as Darkthrone's sound was in the early days, Fenriz still has a sense of humor and you can just tell that this dude is just a regular old dude when it comes down to it, and a music lover to boot. The first one starts off in Norsk, but they speak mostly English for the remainder of the 10 minute interview.
This one is completely in Norsk, but it has English subtitles and it is super funny. Fenriz is interviewed for some weird mainstream Norwegian TV magazine about his favorite record.
Dude. We just watched Fenriz play air guitar to Uriah Heep in his bedroom.
Gabe Serbian told me that the last time The Locust toured Norway, he met Fenriz and went to his house to hang out. Aparently, Fenriz had a Wham! 7" sitting in his room. When Gabe asked him about it, he got all embarassed and told him he just liked the cover. Hmmm....
So here is a download of that Adrenaline O.D. song Fenriz was rocking out to in the first video. So good.
I just ordered a copy of the new Striborg DVD from Aquarius Records in San Francisco and I can't wait to see it! Here is a video of some of the outtakes from the DBD I found.
And if you aren't familiar with Striborg, you can check it out by following the link below. Not for everyone. Not for 99%, more like it. This is some EXTREMELY raw, primitive, fucked black metal from the rainforests of Tasmania.
Today is stormy and cold in sunny Southern California. Brandon and I just hung out in my living room drinking Earl Grey and listening to the newest Nortt album called Galgenfrist. It was perfect. So, I thought I would share one of the tracks with you. Definitely not for the faint of heart, this is funeral doom... like listening to a black metal record on 16. Super dark and sludgy, but with that evil edge that makes black metal exciting. I'm not a big fan of doom in general. Nortt transcends the constraints doom metal has somehow. This is Havet Hinsides Havet. Danish Funeral Doom!
The song of the day is Paralyzed by Holbein, which is the black metal side project I have with my brother, Pascal. We recorded this song last summer, and due to other projects requiring more of our time, our E.P. has never reached completion. This was the first song we recorded together for this project, and it actually isn't in final form. We recorded all the songs with a drum machine and planned on laying drum tracks when all the songs had been written, so this song still has quantized drums on it. Whatever.
If you are into Burzum, Xasthur, Leviathan, Make a Change... Kill Yourself, or any other slow, depressive type of black metal, then you may dig this. I hope to have the E.P. done this year.
Last night, Ryan and I did the first Worst Music Ever in San Francisco. You all will be happy to know that it was an unmitigated success and we each made enough money to to buy 50 more WME style records for next month. Dollar dollar bin, ya'll... (By the way, I would appreciate it if you didn't bite that phrase. I am using it for my Worst Music Ever mixtape. Thank you.)
Oh, did I say NEXT MONTH? Yes, children, next month. Sunday, February 17, we will resume the work of sonic terrorism with another Worst Music Ever night. My favorite part of the night besides making people dance to Lady In Red, I'm Just A Girl, and Africa by Toto is when people walk up to the dj booth and flip us the bird.
Now, at this time it is my duty as an unabashed self promoter to inform you, once again, of the Booty Bassment San Francisco One Year Anniversary tomorrow night at The Knock Out. To help ring in the second year of BBSF, I give you Bitches! by DJ Funk. I aaaaalmost didn't post this song because it's kinda my favorite right now and I don't really want to share it, but fuck it. Butt fuck it. Have it. Just take it.
Oh, I also would like to mention that I am sorely disappointed in all of you because NOT ONE PERSON has downloaded Wind Beneath My Wings. What the "F", as they say? Please, someone download it.
Look, I know I already posted this goldang flier, but you must know, I don't give a shit. So anyway, it's TONIGHT.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, I give you two special songs: Bette Midler's crowning achievement, Wind Beneath My Wings, and the proto-emo masterpiece All By Myself by Eric Carmen. THAWEET. See you at The Knock Out, doggfather.
Yes, I know I've been slacking on my posts. Sorry. I'll try harder next time.
Anyway, this fuzzy little guy is called William Bensusan, aka The Gaslmap Killer. I'm not sure if you are aware, but dude has been killing hard beats for years now and he deserves your big ups. Plus he's my homie, therefor, he gets the song of the day today.
Today's Song of the Day is Wonderful Offer by Lora Logic. If you aren't familiar with Lora Logic, she was a member of the groundbreaking English bands X-Ray Spex and Essential Logic. This song was released as the first solo Lora Logic single, but it can now be found on the Essential Logic double disc retrospective Fanfare in the Garden from Kill Rock Stars. Thanks to KRS for this wonderful release, which I stumbled upon as an unwanted promo copy when I worked at Music Trader in 2003. This song was actually not one of my favorites when I first started listening to the album, but in the years since, it has grown on me. It just doesn't get old, so take a listen if you haven't already.
This isn't exactly a song... it's a whole mixtape that Ryan P. and I made in San Francisco in the winter of MMVII (that means 2007 for ya'll smart dumb cats). I think it's pretty A.O.K., if I do say so myself. Also, it is a large file (99.3 mb), so be patient with the download. Please enjoy the fruit of my toil.
The storm is on in Southern California, and I love it. So, in dedication to my favorite form of weather, I give you I Wish it Would Rain by The Cougars. You may recognize it because The Temptations also recorded their own version of this song, but I prefer this one by the good old Cougs. Please turn on the jam and watch the rain...
The band is Nuit Noire from France. This is a two man band which in years past, had played strictly weirdo black metal. They are definitely branching out with this new album entitled Fantomatic Plentitude. The instrumentation remains pretty grim and lightning fast a lot of the time, but it also ventures into weird angular no-wave riffage and punk attitude with vocals from their singer Tenebras that are a close match for Olga of the Toy Dolls. Think that sounds weird? How about the song titles. I Love You? I am a Fairy? Yeah. These dudes are wonderfully odd. Please enjoy. There are actually two songs for you to download here. Lucky you.
Hello and Happy New Year to all. I hope you all had a good NYE and nobody got too drunk. Ahem.
So, from now on I will be adding a "song of the day" for you all to download and listen to. On second thought, I doubt I'll do it every day, but such is life. I'll do it as often as possible. I have been thinking about doing this for a little while and I guess there is no time like the present, so here goes.
The first song is from Dead Kennedys... the first track off their second album, Plastic Surgery Disasters, entitled Advice From Christmas Past. This is dedicated to all the chickenheads I had to deal with while djing at The Casanova Lounge on New Year's Eve. You aren't welcome.
